چکیده

Abstract: We consider the anisotropic uniaxial formulation of the perfectly matched layer model (UPML). We prove the decay of different energies for the UPML, under certain assumptions, to demonstrate the well-posedness of this formulation. We present and analyze a mixed finite element method for the time domain discretization of the UPML to simulate wave propagation in unbounded domains in two dimensions. On rectangles the spatial discretization uses bilinear finite elements for the electric field and the lowest order RaviartThomas divergence conforming elements for the magnetic field. We use a centered finite difference method for the time discretization. We compare the finite element technique presented to the finite difference time domain method (FDTD) via a stability, dispersion, phase error and numerical reflection coefficient analysis. We derive the reflection coefficient for the case of a semi-infinite layer to show consistency between the numerical and continuous models, and in the case of a finite PML to study the effects of terminating the absorbing layer. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the mixed finite element scheme by numerical examples and provide comparisons with the split field PML discretized by the FDTD method. In conclusion, we observe that the mixed finite element scheme for the PML model has absorbing properties that are comparable to the FDTD method.

A New Finite Element Formulation for Buckling and Free Vibration Analysis of Timoshenko Beams on Variable Elastic Foundation

In this study, the buckling and free vibration of Timoshenko beams resting on variable elastic foundation analyzed by means of a new finite element formulation. The Winkler model has been applied for elastic foundation. A two-node element with four degrees of freedom is suggested for finite element formulation. Displacement and rotational fields are approximated by cubic and quadratic polynomia...

Mixed finite element formulation enriched by Adomian method for vibration analysis of horizontally curved beams

Abstract: The vibration analysis of horizontally curved beams is generally led to higher order shape functions using direct finite element method, resulting in more time-consuming computation process. In this paper, the weak-form mixed finite element method was used to reduce the order of shape functions. The shape functions were first considered linear which did not provide adequate accuracy....

General Closed-Form PML Constitutive Tensors to Match Arbitrary Bianisotropic and Dispersive Linear Media

The perfectly matched layer (PML) constitutive tensors that match more general linear media presenting bianisotropic and dispersive behavior are obtained for single interface problems and for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) corner regions. The derivation is based on the analytic continuation of Maxwell’s equations to a complex variables domain. The formulation is Maxwellian so...

An Efficient Time-Domain Perfectly Matched Layers Formulation for Elastodynamics on Spherical Domains

Many practical applications require the analysis of elastic wave propagation in a homogeneous isotropic media in an unbounded domain. One widely used approach for truncating the infinite domain is the socalled method of Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs). Most existing PML formulations are developed for finite difference methods based on the first-order velocity-stress form of the elastic equation...

Simulation of the Finite Difference Time Domain in Two Dimension

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is one of the most widely used computational methods in electromagnetic. This paper describes the design of two-dimensional (2D) FDTD simulation software for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization using Berenger's split-field perfectly matched layer (PML) formulation. The software is developed using Matlab programming language. Numerical examples v...
